Finished with embroidered ‘Libertas’ motifs of 1886 – the year of the statue’s dedication – and Lady Liberty. In her left hand. she holds shackles. as originally intended by sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi to commemorate the end of slavery; a monument intentionally built to celebrate emancipation. relocated to her feet and obscured before completion following American funders’ rejection of Bartholdi’s vision.
